“What products are right for me?”
This is the question we hear most often from our community. We get it, skincare can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to choose the right regimen for your individual needs – we’ve even created an in-depth Skin Quiz to make it easier for you. Because we believe great skin doesn’t have to be a mystery and knowing your skin type is the key to finding your perfect match.
Your skin is unique to you as an individual, but there are a few common categories used to determine what kinds of products will suit you according to a few key characteristics. We typically see four different skin types: Normal, Dry, Oily and Combination. These categories provide a foundation to understanding your skin and decoding which products are right for you. Wondering how to find your skin type? Start by reading through our skin type descriptions below to see what resonates with you!
Normal Skin
Not uncomfortably dry or flaky and not overly shiny or oily, those with a normal skin type find that their skin is smooth and balanced. Your skin can handle different kinds of treatment without sensitivity. Regular exfoliation, anti-aging formulas and antioxidant focused products are great to maintain your beautiful, balanced skin.
Atmosphere Protection Cream
This lightweight moisturizer is a silky everyday formula ideal for normal skin. Atmosphere Protection Cream boasts antioxidant rich oils and seaweed to provide daily barrier protection. The subtle aroma of Lavender and Geranium is like a spa treatment from the comfort of home.
Dry Skin
Dry skin often feels tight through the day, and may even feel itchy or be noticeably flaky. It produces less sebum than normal skin, so the skin may have trouble creating an adequate protective barrier. This can make dry skin sensitive (more on this later) and more likely to show signs of aging. Gentle exfoliation will help to boost skin turnover for a fresher look but be careful of over-exfoliating which can sensitize skin. Products with a focus on boosting hydration, strengthening the lipid barrier, and containing firming ingredients like peptides are good options for dry skin types.
Side note: Dehydrated skin can be confused with dry skin, but it’s a more temporary version. You might see traits of dry skin circumstantially after an intense sweat sesh, too much coffee or alcohol, and not enough water intake. Hydrating internally with water, electrolytes and healthy fats usually rebalances dehydrated skin.
Advanced Protection Cream
Dry skin doesn’t stand a chance with our Advanced Protection Cream. This ultra-rich firming face cream provides a velvety protective barrier for drier skin. Plant-based amino acid DPHP and a vegan retinol alternative plump the look of fine lines and wrinkles while a super moisturizing blend of a biomimetic lipid complex, glycerin, shea butter and Undaria seaweed flood the skin with hydration.
Oily Skin
With oily skin types we often see shiny or glossy skin, enlarged pores, and skin that may be prone to congestion or blemishes. The excess oil is a result of skin that produces more sebum than normal skin. The good news is that oily skin shows fewer signs of premature aging, as sebum keeps skin supple and hydrated. Regular exfoliation will help to prevent sebum build-up which can lead to congestion. Balancing lightweight hydrators like Argan Oil, Squalane, and Hyaluronic Acid are all good oily skin treatments.
Ocean Cleansing Mudd
This cleanser sets the stage for balanced oil production. Ocean Cleansing Mudd exfoliates and invigorates to reduce oily shine without stripping skin. Laminaria Seaweed decongests pores of excess oil while Peppermint and Tea Tree Oils leave the skin with a refreshing tingle.
Combo Skin
Combo skin is usually normal or oily in the T-zone (forehead and down the nose and chin) but dry in the cheeks. Combination skin types may benefit from multi-masking or zone treating skin. This is a method that uses more active products on the oilier areas and more gentle products on the cheeks. Everyday products for a combination skin type will balance oily skin and hydrate drier areas.
Hyaluronic Sea Serum
Call it universal skincare, because this serum works for every skin type. Hyaluronic Sea Serum offers weightless moisture with a blend of seaweed and two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid. Promotes a balanced complexion by hydrating to reduce oil and simultaneously quenching dry skin.
Sensitive Skin
Prone to redness and irritation, sensitive skin can be found in any of the skin types above but is more likely to occur in dry or combo skin. Sensitive skin may be hereditary or skin can become sensitized from stripping products, overexposure to sun or harsh environment. Soothing and non-irritating fragrance-free formulas that hydrate and support the skin’s barrier will benefit sensitive skin.
Ocean Cleansing Milk
A calming creamy cleanser is the first-step in soothing sensitive skin, this cleanser visibly reduces redness while restoring natural hydration to the skin.
Blemish Prone Skin
Like sensitive skin, blemish prone skin can be found in any skin type. Oily skin tends to be the most blemish prone, but dry or combo skin may also develop congestion because of an imbalance in the skin’s barrier. Regular exfoliation appropriate for your skin type will reduce build-up of sebum and dead skin cells that breed blemishes. Balancing hydration with barrier supporting factors keeps skin of all types clear.
Blemish Balm
The problem solver, this barely there moisturizer calms red spots and minimizes shine. With three varieties of seaweed and pore purifiers like Tea Tree, White Thyme, and Rosemary, Blemish Balm targets blemishes and prevents future breakouts. Perfect for everyday use to soothe surface redness and decongest pores.
It’s important to remember skin type can change through different phases of your life. Hormonal shifts, stress levels, illness and/or medication, overuse of harsh products and over-exfoliation, seasonal weather, or moving to a new climate can all influence your skin. You may find through your life that you oscillate between skin types and your skin’s needs will shift accordingly. Our Skin Quiz is a great way to navigate these changes as they arise so you can adapt your routine when needed.
